Felicia James

Felicia “Lisa” James, the Founder of Hear My Cries nonprofit and producer of Hear My Cries Documentary, was born and raised in Newark, NJ.  She is a survivor of gun violence.  In April 2016, she was an innocent bystander tragically shot twice and now suffers from quadriplegia.  Additionally, she was impacted by gun violence again when her only child, Avent, age 27, was senselessly murdered on October 28, 2019, in the City of Newark.

These life-altering tragedies compelled her to launch Hear My Cries, A NJ Nonprofit Organization dedicated to educating, advocating, and empowering victimes of violent crimes.  She also works with survivors and their families to heal from trauma and reduce violence in their communities.
She has worked with several Newark community-based organizations to raise gun violence awareness and served as the keynote speaker for multiple justice-involved by youth groups.  She has facilitiated discussions with the Newark Interfaith Alliance and led movements dedicated to eradicating violence.  In addition, she has collaborated with the Newark Antiviolence Coalition and Brick City Peace Collective to host numerous Gun Violence Awareness events.

She was recognized for her work with gun safety through her efforts in the Gun Violence Memorial Project in Newark, NJ.  Ms.James and Hear My Cries received Proclamations from the City of Newark for the team’s arduous work and have contributed to the community.
