Felicia James

Felicia “Lisa” James is an Author, Founder of Hear My Cries, a New Jersey nonprofit organization, and the producer of the documentary Hear My Cries: Women Impacted by Gun Violence. Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Lisa is a survivor of gun violence whose life was forever changed in April 2016 when she was tragically shot twice as an innocent bystander, resulting in quadriplegia.

Her journey through trauma deepened in October 2019 when her only child, Avent, was senselessly murdered at the age of 27 in the City of Newark. These life-altering experiences became the foundation for her purpose.

In response, Lisa founded Hear My Cries, an organization dedicated to educating, advocating, and empowering victims of violent crimes. Through her work, she supports survivors and their families in navigating grief, healing from trauma, and working toward safer communities.

As an author, Lisa has created a collection of reflective and supportive books designed to provide comfort, encourage expression, and offer quiet moments of peace for individuals navigating grief and life’s challenges.

Lisa has partnered with numerous Newark-based organizations to raise awareness about gun violence and has served as a keynote speaker for justice-involved youth groups. Through Hear My Cries, she creates safe, transformative spaces where individuals and families impacted by violence are able to speak openly, be heard without judgment, and begin their healing journey. Drawing from her own lived experiences, she offers real, heartfelt guidance that resonates deeply with those navigating grief, trauma, and loss—reminding them that they are not alone. She has also worked with the Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery, along with collaborations that include the Newark Anti-Violence Coalition and the Brick City Peace Collective, where she has helped organize and host multiple Gun Violence Awareness events.

Her dedication has been recognized through her involvement in the Gun Violence Memorial Project in Newark, New Jersey. Ms. James and Hear My Cries have received proclamations from the City of Newark for their meaningful contributions to the community. Hear My Cries was also honored as Outstanding Partner of the Year by the Brick City Peace Collective for its impactful work in violence prevention and community healing. She is also a recipient of the Profile in Courage Award from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, presented during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, recognizing her outstanding contributions on behalf of crime victims and their families.

A leader, healer, survivor, and author, Lisa James offers a powerful and unique perspective on the impact of violence. She remains steadfast and unwavering in her mission to create change, uplift others, and ensure that no voice goes unheard.
